All of us got into the shop this morning and went straight to work. Phylis and I working on the Annie Oakley drop again by pouncing part of the circle on the drop and then pouncing that section onto the drop. We then took the craft paper back over to our area and continued pouncing the craft paper. By lunch we had some of the lettering done. Then mid afternoon rolled around and we had almost all of the lettering done. Then by the time I left tonight the horse and 90% of the lettering was done. Before the pouncing we also drew everything in and somewhere in there I back painted part of the train which is almost assembled.
Oh, I forgot to tell you all we are painting Annie Get Your Gun that is the show I am working on right now. Also, the rain was not half as bad as it was yesterday.
I got an Easter basket in the mail from my Mom it was really nice to get it and know she is thinking of me.

Tuesday... lots of rain... :(
This morning after all of us got into the shop Patti and I made more boxes for the Annie Oakley drop. Then both of us stapled down the actual canvas being used for the drop and some scrim that is supposed to go on the back of the drop behind Annie’s face. There was a lot more lettering today on the two drops I was working on yesterday so that I did on and off all day. Patti and I starched the Annie Oakley drop which was fun because I had never done that before. The whole group sat down for lunch today and some people ran errands. The people who ran errands came back and told us that parts of the roads were flooded. It had been raining almost non stop since Monday night so I was not surprised. Needless to say it rained very hard all day long.
After lunch my afternoon was spent doing more and more lettering. I got a small break when I got to paint the train seating all over again because the carpenters forgot some finishing touches on them. I didn’t mind though because it was a break from all the lettering. I managed to get the base coat and two coats of copper paint on before it was time to go.

Monday... =P
This morning when I got into work Krista and I got the finale drop up and off the floor. Some of the carpenters came in, rolled it up, and took it away to be loaded on stage. The rest of my morning was helping Emily align different lettering that needed to be pounced on to the smaller drops. The whole group then had lunch and we couldn’t go outside and walk because there was a torrential down pour all day.
After lunch Emily and I finished pouncing the two drops with all of their lettering components. After that was finished we both started inking the drops with sharpie. You cannot make mistakes in the instance so needless to say I was quite nervous. Emily was pulled away to start helping someone else with another project and I was left all by myself. I got even more nervous then but there was nothing I could do about it so I just kept inking the drop I was working on. Later Phyllis came over and started inking the second lettered drop.
Now I am home and trying to finish more job applications.

Sunday...
Today I slept in till 11 am which was really nice. I got up and had a hot pocket for lunch. Eric, Allegra, and I went to the Family Laundromat to do laundry which was fun because it is in Deep River so we got to walk around the town square while our laundry was going. We went in to Dunkin’ Doughnuts, that was my first time being in there and it reminded me a lot of Tim Horton’s. I spent the rest of the day applying for summer and full time seasonal work. I don’t want to say where because I don’t want to jinx it.
Saturday...
Saturday March 27, 2010
I got up today and made lunch then started working on journal writing. So I finally found a real legitimate grocery store I made a trip to the Old Saybrook Stop & Shop today. It took about 25 minutes to get there and it was packed because it was a Saturday afternoon. I sense that I am just going to have to get used to this driving 30 minutes to get to anything business.
I took some pictures this afternoon:
This is where I am living
This is my backyard
In the evening I made chicken quesadillas and watched some TV. Later in the night I started working on internship applications.

Thursday and Friday...
Thursday March 25, 2010
In the morning Phyllis and I made more boxes for several smaller drop we stapled them to the deck and made sure they were square. I put the first coat of copper on to the train seats. Then the whole group had lunch and some of us went on a walk during the first part of our lunch break because it was so nice outside. While I was painting the train seat I got to watch several different people starch the drops, which was something I had never seen before.
After lunch the sky drop was starched twice because it is a translucent drop. I helped finish perforating the lettered drop I had started Wednesday.
Tonight I went out with a few carpenters and almost all of the painters to a place called Rudy’s it’s a small dive bar in New Haven. Rudy’s reminded me a lot of Houndog’s back home except more chicken tenders and fries instead of pizza.
Friday March 26, 2010
In the morning I worked with Julia, we took the craft paper the we perforated for the sky drop and taped it over the drop. Then we used little pouches of charcoal and attached them to bamboo sticks. The both of us then proceeded to rub the charcoal over the drawing. The next step was to lift the craft paper off the drop and what was left was a faint charcoal drawing of the sky. I helped Julia prepare her work space so she could start air brushing the drop. I then started the second coat of copper paint on the train seats. The majority of us went to lunch at The Cooking Company today. It is this really cute little place down the street from the paint shop. They have sandwiches that you can order or premade food. I got bow tie pasta and fresh fruit it was delicious.
When I got back from lunch I finished the second coat on the train seating. Then I removed bridges from two of the smaller drops and stapled them back to the deck. After I did that Krista sprayed the drops with hot water apparently this gets out even more wrinkles that might be left from taking out the bridge. My next task was to help Alison mask off different parts of the train that were going to get painted gold. I had to be very precise so that the wood grain that was already finished did not get ruined. The pieces that I masked off are to be painted gold. I put a base coat on all of the different molding pieces. For the rest of the day I helped Phyllis snap border lines around a huge drop that had Indians and pioneers on it. It seems very intricate and looks like it will take a really long time to paint. Other people were working on it by inking the out lines of the different figures on the drop.
My roommate Erin cooked garlic chicken tonight and she is a pretty good cook I think I am going to ask her to show me a few of her ticks in the kitchen.
My roommates and I had a little shindig here in the house last night. It was fun and I got to meet some new people mostly from the box office all of the other people I had previously met.

Day Two...
After getting in to the paint shop this morning everyone went to their different projects. The whole morning Phyllis and I spent projecting the sky drop on to craft paper. We traced the lines from the projector on to the craft paper in sections to create a grid that can be lined up on to the drop. The drop is 37ft by 16ft 6in so needless to say it took the whole morning to complete it. Then the group sat in the break room and had lunch again.
My afternoon was spent switching more of the bogus paper on the deck. Then Phyllis and I mapped out a box for the sky drop to be stapled into. We used some geometry and lining sticks to make the box. Phyllis and I then stapled the drop into the box and because our math was right the first time it fit. I cleaned off the deck after we completed stapling the sky drop. The last little bit of my day was spent pouncing lettering for another drop.
Now I am going to see if I can finish my paper work for Goodspeed.
It's sunny today! :)

First Day plus the weekend...
Sunday March 21, 2010
Spent 9 hours driving with my Mom we spent the night in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was nice to spend the time with my Mom.
Monday March 22, 2010
Got up early with my Mom and we drove the last 4 hours to East Haddam, Connecticut. We arrived at the paint shop around 2:00 pm and I meet Carla. She briefly introduced me to some of the people who were over hire in the shop. My first impression of the shop is that it is huge and amazing. From first glance I could tell they had an area for washing, mixing, storage, and lots of floor space. All three of us drove over to The Boardman which is where I am to stay while I am at Goodspeed. Then Carla went back to the paint shop while my Mom and I went to lunch.
When we got back from lunch we moved everything up to my room and then went to the near by super market. The super market was very, very tiny I now know I need to find a bigger one because this one was not going to cut it (and it was really expensive). Then my Mom left which was sad because this is literally the first time I have lived further then 30 minutes from her. I am really on my own now. I then proceeded to move into my room and get settled. I am in room “S” it has a double bed and a closet so I feel really lucky to have some space. My room is also on the third floor in the back of the house so I do have some privacy which is really nice. People started coming home, so around 6:30 pm I went down stairs and made my dinner, hoping to meet some new people.
I met Emily she is a Boston University Graduate and she says she got the job here because her professor Diane used to be the charge artist at Goodspeed for a couple years. Emily is a over hire scenic artist and also lives in New York, New York where she primarily does free lance work. I met Erin who is an electrics apprentice she graduated from a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania. Eric is also one of my roommates and he actually only has 2 years of college under his belt and started working here because the Technical Director at the time offered him an over hire job and now he is a carpentry apprentice. I watched some TV with all of them and then went to bed.
Tuesday March 23, 2010
My first day as the painting intern was a lot of fun. In the morning all of us hung out in the break room until Carla gave everybody their projects of the moment. Carla and I then went over to the scene shop which is right across the parking lot from the paint shop. I was introduced to Adam who is the technical director, Eric who I had already met, Rob Z (Carla loves to call him ROBZZZZZ), and the props carpenter who’s name I cannot remember right now. Then we went past props storage to the props kitchen where I was introduced to Tony the props master and Tom who is his assistant (Carla calls Tom, Guacamole Tom, why I will find out). Before we left the building we went up to Adam’s office where I got to meet Charlie, Adam’s dog, he is so cute and very spazzy so we get along really well.
Carla and I walked back over to the paint shop where she gave me the grand tour of the shop. It is bigger and even more fabulous then I thought! There is an area for washing brushes, mixing paint, work tables on wheels, and a soft goods area. The cool part was the storage which was all labeled and you have to sign out stuff when you take it out of storage so Carla knows when to order more. The whole shop is organized and kept clean 24/7, I was stunned. There is also a projection area that is curtained off which was really neat. The way they label their paint is they write each color they mixed in to get the color, and then list them by what color they put the most of in. I thought that was really nice so the next person can mix more if needed. There is a raised floor on the second half of the shop that is called the deck where they paint their soft goods.
After my tour I started working with Krista she actually graduated from Clemson University with an Architecture degree. Then she went on to Florida University and got her MFA in Scenic Design. I got to talk to her a majority of the day about her career. I must say she is a very good teacher. My first project was to cover bare wood on the sides of some scenery because Goodspeed never puts any bare wood on stage, Carla told me this. Then I worked with Krista on cutting out and lining up some craft paper that we are going to later pounce and use to map out a drop. The both of us next went over to the front of the shop and used pounce wheels to perforate the Cowboy graphic on craft paper. Later it will be put on to a drop by tapping a pouch of charcoal on it so that when you remove the craft paper there is a guide to complete the drop. Then we all went into the break room to have lunch. There are not many places to eat around East Haddam. Apparently there is not much of anything unless you drive about a half hour according to Emily which I am sure is true. Needless to say everyone packed there lunch today.
After lunch Krista and I helped Patti and Phyllis recover the deck with paper because it got to messy. Apparently the deck gets fresh paper after every show but the projects this time are just really messy. Then the four of us measured out a drop and I learned what “burning a foot” means, when you are measuring a drop you start at one foot and then measure from there because you cannot count on the bottom of a tape measurer to be perfect so they just start measuring at a foot.
The rest of the day Krista and I spent working on the proscenium pieces for the show. We flipped the front most piece to the back and stapled it back to the deck. Then we “back painted” it which means at least 80% of all of the scenery has to be painted on the back because of fire hazards. Apparently the fire marshal is a stickler for the rules so we follow them to a tee here at Goodspeed. Also, the piece needed to be painted on the back for lighting purposes so no light would come through the back. The last part of my day was getting a demo from Krista on how clean the brushes need to be and cutting scalloped edges on the other proscenium pieces.
I was introduced to two new people today. Alison is a painter who graduated from Boston University she is also a student of Diane’s. Julia is one of my roommates and she worked on a sample for the sky drop today. It looked amazing and I am pretty sure from her sample that she will paint the drop with an air brush technique.
Julia, Emily, Alison, and I went to the Adam’s fresh food market after work and the selection is a little better there but still expensive. Julia told me if I really want to go grocery shopping I should go to the grocery in Old Saybrook called the Super Stop & Shop. She says it’s a lot nicer and cheaper. We all came home, had dinner and watched Jeopardy. Now I am going to fill out paper work so that I can get a paycheck at the end of the week.
It has rained everyday since I got here. :(
