Back in Ohio...

I came back to Ohio in August and found myself with an interview at CATCO-Pheonix, Aerie and Lane Bryant.  I ended up getting a part time costume internship at CATCO-Pheonix and a part time job at Lane Bryant.  I turned down the job at Aerie because Lane Bryant gave me a better offer.  I also, like shopping at Lane Bryant as opposed to Aerie.  I have been having alot of fun at CATCO-Pheonix, learning alot about organiation of a costume shop, and the construction of a garment.  Recently, I helped build two elvis type jump suits for The Last Smoker In America which CATCO just premiered.  The show is going on to premier on Broadway in a couple of weeks.  I most recently charged The Legend Of Sleepy Hallow for Pheonix Children's Theatre.  I had alot of fun painting that show because it was nice to get back to painting for a little bit since I had not painted since the begining of August.  Minus my lack of sleep from all the work I have been doing I really love my life right now because I am able to pick and choose my jobs.  I don't have to be boxed in or labeled I can do what makes me happy.

I am also completely revapming my resume, cover letter, and web site so more to come.

End of Week 10...

Friday May 28, 2010

In the morning Phyllis and I finished perforating the Cirque sign pounce. Then for the rest of the day both of us were back in the projecting room cartooning the pounces for Carnival drops. Together we finished both A and B strips for the lower part of the translucent drop. We also got a majority of the upper part of the tent drop cartooned in. Both of us will probably finish it on Tuesday when we are back. Monday is off for the shops because of Memorial Day. Phyllis and I got a lot down today I was pretty proud. Then after work we had the BBQ and a cake that Carla made for Katie’s Birthday, Happy Birthday Katie!! Some of us went bowling after the BBQ in Old Saybrook, it was fun and I had no idea it was there.

Saturday May 29, 2010

I the morning I could not sleep in again so I went for a walk around Creamry Rd. Then I got ready for the day and did laundry. I talked with Anna for a little bit about our trip to NY on Monday since I have the day off. I cleaned my room a little bit because it was looking sloppy. I looked up a couple events going on in the city on Monday. I looked at a couple of cars online just because I wanted to see what was on the market. There was also a fun dance party that was put on by a couple of my roommates which was a lot of fun.

Sunday May 30, 2010

I slept in which was nice and I made hot dogs for lunch. I had gotten movies from the library so I watched Duplicity this afternoon. I basically hung around and had a lazy day.

Thursday...

Thursday May 27, 2010

In the morning I finished the pounce for the detail piece on the puppet stage. I then covered flats for more samples to be done for Carnival. Then we all had a short lunch so that we could get out early. I helped Katie fix apart of the deck that had been rained on the night before. We snapped lines and inked them in with brown sharpie. It was really sad, this puddle had formed under the deck and at least a third of it was soaked and had to be trashed because it was warping. I felt really bad because everyone had worked so hard to get to the point we were at but at least now it looks like nothing had happened. In the afternoon I also worked on the Cirque Sign pounce and I washed some prevalves and misters. I picked up some popsicles on the way home for the BBQ tomorrow.

Tuesday and Wednesday....

Tuesday May 26, 2010

In the morning Katie and I made boxes on craft paper to fit a couple of the soft good projects that we are doing for Carnival. In the afternoon we based the deck and then when it was dry we sprayed a lighter color on top with the Hudson. I sprayed the paper on the deck to see if it would flatten out and not be so wrinkly. I cleaned some buckets and then we all went home.

Wednesday May 26, 2010

In the morning Katie and I marked all of the wooden planks on the deck then we snapped all the lines with a chalk line. Towards the end of the morning we made a craft paper grid for the detail piece on the top of the puppet stage for Carnival. Then I had to leave so I could get ready for my interview.
It took me about an hour and a half to get to Trinity Rep. and it was there right off of the I-95 exit. I explained my portfolio and asked questions. The whole group also asked me questions which I thought I answered pretty well. Megan gave me a tour of the theater and there were a lot, a lot of staircases. Overall I think it went pretty well and this was my first face to face interview so it was good to get the experience interviewing. I a supposed to know the week of June 14th whether I got the job or not.

Week 10 Begins...

Monday May 24, 2010

In the morning I mixed an tinted primer for the deck for Carnival. Then I finished mixing the second base color for the deck that I had started on Friday. The buckets smelled so bad that Carla had Katie and I dump all of the water out of them and just let them dry out to use for slope buckets. It had been smelling like baby poop for about two weeks so thank the lord were just getting rid of most of the buckets. I was happy to see them be done with because heaven knows what would of happened if they had sat there any longer. Katie and I cleaned out the bath tubs that are our sinks. I think it is pretty much genius to just use a bath tub as a slope sink because it is large enough for our purposes. The both of us cleaned out the screens and scrapped out the bottom of the tubs. It was interesting to take the whole sink apart and clean it. Also, in the afternoon all three of us primed the deck and then we went home.

Week 9

Sorry dear readers I have not been able to post in a while beacuse where I have been living did not have internet for two weeks.

Monday May 17, 2010

In the morning we repapered the deck. It was really weird to see the deck without paper on it and so clean. I also broke down some boxes so that there weren’t so many eating up pace in the back of the shop. During lunch I went to the library t mail my journals because the Boardman still does not have internet. Then in the afternoon I washed buckets and pounced a circus scene for a sample with Phyllis and Patti.

Tuesday May 18, 2010

In the morning I took all of the, Band, Geeks! paint out of the road box and put it on a shelf for storage in the shop until the show is over. Then I took all of the Carnival renderings and put them between cardboard and acetate to protect them when we start painting. Then I helped Phyllis and Patti render in the pounce on to one of the samples for Carnival. Then we all broke for a short lunch so that we could leave early. Patti talked about how she is leaving for France in two days. How I wish I could go with her. In the afternoon I sloped/ made back paint out of the left over Buffalo Bill Drop from Annie Get Your Gun. I also washed buckets for the last hour of work. There is a new painter named Katie in the shop. She will be here for the whole summer with me and I like she a lot she is always upbeat.
In the evening some of my roommates and I went out for pizza. The place was called Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria and it had the best thin crust pizza I have ever had. I will definitely be going back.

Wednesday May 19, 2010

In the morning Katie and I made some starch and throughout the day we starched the back of the Carnival sample to make it translucent. I made some tinted alcohol bin for the carpenters to paint the steel. I got rid of some Annie Get You Gun pounces because we didn’t need them anymore. I also, made a 15’ by 34’ sheet to cartoon for the sky drop in Carnival. Since there were too many deli cups to wash Carla had me throw them away which was fun because no one has to wash them now, YAY! My hands kind of stink from the water the cups were soaking in but it was worth it to just throw them away, it was fun. I put away some buckets we had washed yesterday and helped put some inventory away. I based out the floor sample before we left for the day. In the evening I went to the library to use the internet and then went for a walk.

Thursday May 20, 2010

In the morning I lined out some boards for the wood planked floor sample. I cleaned my roller from yesterday when I put on the base coat for the floor sample. I got to mix color today which was very exciting!! I mixed the base color for the brick on the portal. I also, applied the base to the brick sample and got that ready. I then started mixing the other two base colors for the brick. I did not finish mixing them before the end of the day because I helped Carla and Katie finish the translucent sample. We cut the top off the muslin that is supposed to be the scrim area. Then we matched up the muslin and scrim together. The last step was to glue the scrim and muslin together with felxbond. At the end of the day we just cleaned up the shop and went home. I went to the library to get on the internet after work.

Friday May 21, 2010

In the morning I mixed two more brick colors and helped get the circus tent sample off the floor. Adam and Carla looked at it in the morning and Carla decided to make some adjustments to it. I think the whole idea of having a scrim at the top part of the drop and translucency at the bottom will give a pretty cool affect. I am excited to see it when it is finished, it will be wonderful. In the afternoon Katie and I made a trip to Essex hardware and picked up some supplies that the shop needed. We picked up some 2.5 quart buckets, some 1, 2, 3, primer, black gloss spray paint to name a few. When we got back to the shop we stopped early for the day. The carpenters invited all of us over to the scene shop to hang out so the three of us went over there to chit chat. When I got home I went for a walk, it was pretty hot and muggy but I wanted to anyways.

Saturday May 22, 2010

Even though I hung out with my roommates last night and stayed up I woke up at 8 am and could not go back to sleep. I am kind of tired but I can’t sleep. I got up and did my laundry and went to the grocery store. I then went and picked up my car from the Honda dealership, the total cost was a little more the $800 dollars to fix it, what can I do I had to pay it. I got some prints of my portfolio pictures so I could have some to show at my interview on Wednesday along with my website portfolio. I also went to Burlington Coat factory and got a cute blouse and jacket for my interview. I have been doing some research on Trinity Rep which is where I have my interview, they seem to be very active in their community and have a fully staffed costume shop.

Sunday May 23, 2010

I slept in until 10:00 am, thank the lord. I made lunch and then went to the mall with Katie. We walked around the whole time and browsed, I had a lot of fun. In the evening I watched Monsoon Wedding its by the same Director who did Vanity Fair which is ne of my favorite movies.

Week 8

Sunday May 10, 2010

Jason got into town today, YAY! I amazingly slept in until noon today. I made a salad for lunch and I worked on my SYE paper. Jason and I went to Friendly’s for dinner and it was pretty good, I had never been there before. When we got back to the house we watched Frost Nixon which was a film about Watergate. It did not move very quickly but it was an ok movie.

Monday May 10, 2010

Today I spent my morning consolidating all of the, Band, Geeks! colors in to small deli cups and packing them into the road box. At lunch I had chefboyrdee and strawberries. In the afternoon I spent more time consolidating colors and I back painted the scoreboard for the show. I all so painted some boards dark grey for the show. By the end of the day the road box was ready to go and I was cleaning rollers. When I got home Jason and I made spaghetti and meat balls which was pretty good.

Tuesday May 11, 2010

In the morning the whole crew met at the Chester theatre, its official name is the Norma Terris Theatre. We did paint notes on stage until about ten ‘o clock. Then everyone went back to the shop to clean. I disposed of some dried cans of shellac and some big buckets of dye. I also, took out the trash while helping Phyllis and Patti get rid of the left over show paint that didn’t fit in the road box. The rest of my day I spent cleaning rollers and paint trays. I cleaned out some buckets too.
When I got home Jason and I made dinner and we watched the first Iron Man, on Thursday were going to go see Iron Man 2. In other news the internet here has not been working properly since Friday and as of Monday it doesn’t work at all.

Wednesday May 12, 2010

This morning we all gathered at the Chester theatre and did notes. I was sent back to the shop to paint some molding. I painted the base color and a silver color on to them. The rest of my morning I spent filling the slop buckets with saw dust so they would be solid and the carpenters could dispose of them. At lunch I sent my SYE and reflection paper to Greg. I am hoping to get either more ideas I can create more information from because I can’t think of any more to cover in my SYE paper. I also had an instant lunch soup for lunch and it was not as good as I had hoped.
In the afternoon I kept filling slop buckets and put them by the door for carpenters to take. I also, cleaned more buckets and brushes.

Thursday May 13, 2010

In the morning we all met up at the theatre and did paint notes. Then I went back to the shop alone and worked on painting some molding that was to be placed in side the window frames. First I painted on the base coat and then a silver coat. Later Phyllis and Patti gave it a texture to make it look dirty or aged. I went back to my house for lunch where Jason and I made Mac n cheese.
In the afternoon I spent most of my time bucket washing or tidying up the shop. I do get satisfaction out of cleaning in that I can see my work progress before my eyes and I know I am completing the task at hand. I believe that is why I love painting so much because I can see the project from start to finish. If I am lucky enough I even get to see the audience appreciate everyone’s work. It’s a nice feeling to know you are contributing to a bigger grander picture.
Towards the end of the day Krista and I met Carla back at the theatre where we did some more paint notes. There were just a few touch up to be done and tone down the tarps that go on the back of the bleachers. I got to say goodbye to Krista today because she is going to go work at her theatre company, End Station, in Virginia. Her and a friend started it after grad school and have been doing shows every summer since. It takes a lot of guts to put your self out there like that to an audience by taking full control of a company and making the big decisions, such as picking your season. I will miss Krista a lot, she always gave really good advice. I hope I can stay in touch with her through facebook because I don’t have her email unfortunately.
In the evening Jason and I went and saw the opening of Band, Geeks! It was really good and I hope it ends up going to another theatre as Goodspeed hopes it will.

Friday May 14, 2010

This morning I helped Carla finish the head board by sealing it and back painting it. I also, cleaned off the mixing table and put more paint in the slope buckets. I made more pounce bags and got rid of some old ones, also I refilled the pounce boxes.
In the afternoon Jason and I went to the Honda dealership because my sunroof is broken. Now I have to pay $800 dollars to get it fixed. I am so thrilled at the fact that I have put so much money into my car in the only three years that I have owned it. I am extremely frustrated if you can’t tell. Then the two of us went to Five Guys and then to see Iron Man 2 it was pretty bad ass, I defiantly recommend it. I would really watch it when you want to drop kick something it kind of helps.

Saturday May 15, 2010

In the morning Jason and I went over and stuck my laundry in at the Goodspeed laundry place. Then we went to the library to get on the internet because the company housing I am living in has not had internet all week. I found out hat Trinity Rep in Providence wants to interview me for their costume internship program. I am really excited and just need to figure out when I can go in for an interview. Then Jason and I went grocery shopping to get me some little stuff for the week like milk and orange juice. After my laundry was done we went to Gillette Castle and walked around for a bit. It was really nice to be outside on a day when it was not raining. I also found out that the trails run all the way down to the river behind the castle. The whole park was really pretty.

\

In the evening Jason and I watched Burn Before Reading and Wall-E. I made pirogues and pasta for dinner.

Sunday May 16, 2010

Jason and I both got up before noon and I made hot dogs for lunch. For what small time we had in the afternoon together we hung out and talked. Then at 3:30 I drove him to the air port. He has to go home for jury duty I don’t know how much fun he will have doing that but he has to do it. It was very sad to see him leave but I am glad he got to come and see me. I will get to see him when I come home to walk at graduation. Speaking of graduation which I have only four more weeks till it still hasn’t hit me yet.
When I got home from the airport I made dinner and watched some TV with my roommates.

Thursday and Friday...

Thursday May 6, 2010

This morning I worked on masking and painting the ends of the lockers. I matched the color of the lockers to the paint so it would look seamless. I had to put on two coats of a light blue and then two coats of the darker blue that matched the lockers. I worked on this project throughout the day. I also worked on base coating the forced perspective stadium lights I ended up applying two coats of black on the lights. I also, worked on this project throughout the whole day. At lunch I had left over pirogues from my dinner which were still really good. In the afternoon while working on my other two projects I also, unmasked the windows and helped clean a little while some paint would dry.

Friday May 7, 2010

In the morning I started cleaning out the road box from the last show. I mixed the old paint into either a slop bucket if it smelled bad and if it didn’t smell at all I mixed it into our back paint to fireproof. Then it was lunch time and I had Asian pot stickers which were yummy. In the afternoon I organized the paint into piles and organized all of the tools in the road box. After organizing the rod box and all the paint I put some saw horses and ladders away. At 5:15 I ran over to the rehearsal studio and dropped off some dance numbers we had painted to the stage manager. After work I made a stop at the grocery store for some random food I needed because my boy friend Jason is flying in on Sunday.

Beginning of Week 7...

Monday May 3, 2010

This morning the bleacher units got delivered from the scene shop. I based out the concrete on the brick wall units. I also masked off part of the portal the needed to be touched up. During the morning I helped prime and base some more benches that got delivered. We all had lunch and I made soup, it was good. The afternoon I spent with Patti priming and basing the bleacher seats. We also, primed and based the steel parts of the bleachers. Towards the end of the day I applied the first coat of blue silver to the benches and bleachers. When I got home I did some very necessary laundry washing.

Tuesday May 4, 2010

In the morning Krista, Patti, and I put the second coat of silver on to the bleacher units. I also primed the last two benches which got delivered to the paint shop this morning. I back painted the brick walls. Then we had lunch and there was the usual banter about food recipes which I appreciate for the new recipes. We also discussed Patti’s upcoming vacation to Paris, I wish I could go. In the afternoon I masked off parts of the bleachers because the bottom of the bleacher unit is going to be treated to it looks like the show deck. I also spent time in the afternoon painting the boarder of the small football field that goes on stage. I spent time painting the legs of some benches silver.

Wednesday May 5, 2010

In the morning I went back to the benches, I put on two base coats throughout the day because I had to let the dry. I also put on the top primer coat earlier that morning. I cleaned steel on the stadium light units. I back painted the portal. By this time it was lunch and I was excited because I had gotten wedding soup from the grocery store. Wedding soup is by far my favorite soup so needless to say it was a delicious lunch.

In the afternoon I helped mask off and base coat the floor of the door unit. I helped fix the bleacher units after we took masking off because the paint just came right off the steel even though we cleaned it twice. I cleaned the deck up a little bit.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday....

Sunday April 26, 2010

I watched Mona Lisa Smile with Julia Roberts and a ballywood film called Bride and Prejudice. I enjoyed Mona Lisa Smile better just because it had a strong message of female rights with a twist. Lewis and Alex moved in today, they are both with electrics. The house will be even fuller soon or so rumors say. I was not very productive over all but it was nice to relax.

Monday April 26, 2010

Today I worked on the cinder block units again. I did a lot of caulking again today. Patti and I painted in the grout and cinder blocks. We all had lunch together again and after lunch I did a little bit more bucket washing. The carpenters brought over the last cinder block unit which is a door unit on wheels, it rotates in the show. I spent the rest of my afternoon putting on the first layer of caulking on to that unit.

Tuesday April 27, 2010

In the morning I spent finishing the first layer of caulking and starting on the second for the door unit. Phyllis made a strawberry rhubarb pie for all of us and it was fantastic. I had never tried rhubarb before and it was wonderful. In the afternoon I finished the second coat of caulking on the door unit. Then on the opposite side on the cinder block was the tile area so I put the green base coat on to the opposite side of the unit. Then I spent my last half hour cleaning out prevalves and misters because we were running low on clean ones.

Week 5...

Sunday April 18, 2010

Today I went to the airport to do a dry run of my trip in two weeks. Carla is giving me Friday off in two weeks so I can go home and visit my family given the recent event of my Aunt passing. I may not get to go to the funeral that is tomorrow but I will be able to go home and visit my family. Also, in other good news I forgot to mention Carla offered me a job to extend my internship until December if I would like to stay for the whole season. In mid May we are going to discuss my actual dates.

Monday April 19, 2010

Carla let us sleep in this morning and we started work at 9:00 am. The whole team got everything loaded into Patti and Phyllis’ cars and we headed over to the Chester Theatre. Then we loaded everything into the theatre and started preparing the place so we could paint the floor. It took a while to get everything cleaned up and masked off. Then we put the primer coat on. By this time it was lunch and the four of us decided to walk into downtown Chester which was a block away and have lunch. We went to this small little place called Smith’s Market, it is really cute and has dishes similar to Panera.

All of us walked back to the Chester theatre after lunch and we began preparing for the base coat because the primer was dry. We had to paint in all the little screw holes in the floor because it was faster then trying to get them with a roller. So in the next step we put a base coat down for the floor and left so it would dry. I spent the rest of my day consolidating more show paint and getting rid of old paint.

Tuesday April 20, 2010

In the morning we went down to the Chester theatre again Sam and I painted the floor some more. When we got back Carla had me mixing texture for some of the units in Band, Geeks! which is our next show. We all had lunch and after lunch I finished mixing the texture. I then started working on the cinderblock and tile sample for the next show. I also cleaned more buckets today and cleaned around the shop. It’s Phillip’s Birthday on Friday so were all going out to some wing place. It sounds exciting. I also was aloud to run to the hard ware store and get supplies and I took inventory, so Carla is letting me have more responsibility, yay.

Wednesday April 21, 2010

Today I spent most of the morning cleaning and doing maintenance things around the shop. I also did some inventory because we got a shipment of paint in. I made a run to the hardware store for some caulking. Then before lunch we masked off the two new units the carpenters brought over for the show. After lunch we primed the units and then used the texture I had made to create a cinderblock look on the units. It was very interesting to see the plastic paneling take shape into something that appeared to be stone. The texture I made is 3 parts joint compound (light weight) 1.5 parts flexbond and 3 parts sand. The mixture is fascinating to me for some reason because is makes something appear to be something it is not. Then when I came home I made hamburgers for dinner, yum.

Thursday April 22, 2010

In the morning Phyllis and I kept working on the units for Band, Geeks! by adding more texture to the cinderblock areas. We also recaulked everything because when the caulk dries it smaller then when you applied it, since Carla wanted more bulk to it we added another layer. The whole group had lunch again which was nice we discussed America’s food problem it was interesting. The rest of the day I spent caulking so there is not much to report. Also, there was this wicked thunder storm that rolled in and rained buckets but was gone by the time we left work. When we all stepped out side in was breath taking because it looking like a spring morning.

Friday April 25, 2010

In the morning I kept caulking the two units and adding a second layer. Needless to say it takes a long time to do and a lot longer then I thought it would take because you have to be precise and make sure it looks correct. I went to Subway for lunch and it reminds me of home even though I know they exist all across the United States. When I returned from lunch Sam and I went to Chester and took down the masking paper and cleaned up. We basically made it look like we were never there except the floor is ready for the show now. For the rest of the afternoon Sam, Carla and I primed the brick units. I also cleaned more when I had some down time.

In the evening the carpenters and painters went to New London for Phillip’s birthday. We went to his favorite wing place, it’s called Hot Rod’s Restaurant and Bar. The wings were very spicy needless to say but it was so good. Everybody played pool, and there was a Wii there to play, and foosball so it was a pretty cool hang out place.

Saturday April 25, 2010

In the morning I got up and took a walk around the neighborhood. There are not a lot of side walks around here so most of my walking was of the side or in the road. It was a little scary because people are speed demons around here. I watched a couple of movies during the day and worked on my paper. I was able to relax today I also did laundry and went to the grocery store.

Sunday, April 18, 2010

Friday and Saturday....

Friday April 16, 2010

Not all of us came in today just Krista, Sam, and I. I washed buckets all day long. Literally all day long so it doesn’t give me much to talk about in this entry. At the very end of the day during dinner break we did some notes over at the theatre. In the evening I went to see the opening show with Patti, Krista and her fiancé Drew, he is the assistant technical director. The show was very good everyone was amazing, the costumes, lighting, and scenery were well done. After the show Goodspeed hosts a Opening Night Party so we all went to that, it’s for employees, donors, and board members. It was a very classy event.
Saturday April 17, 2010

I finally was able to sleep in a little today which was exciting because my body is so used to this new schedule I have not been able to in weeks. I got up and did laundry at the little laundry place that Goodspeed has for employees. Then I went grocery shopping ay Stop & Shop which was fun, I find grocery shopping calming for some odd reason. When I got home I made spaghetti and meat balls, yum. I watched the movie Made of Honor that I got from the library earlier this week. It was a nice relaxing day.

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Thursday...

This morning we all meet at the theater to do notes from last night’s tech rehearsal. Then we all went over to the shop and cleaned a little more. Lunch was good today even though it was the regular deli sandwiches. The rest of my day was spent removing sample pieces from frames and then applying new canvas on the frames for the next show. I was surprised how many canvas flats there were and how many were used. It’s also nice to be able to do samples for drops on canvas frames. I got paid today, yay.

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Wednesday....

Today the whole group met up at the theatre and we did some paint notes and we cleaned up the road box a little bit because props had made a mess of it. When we all got back to the shop we cleaned up a little more and swept the floor. We also put new paper down on all of the tables and the moveable storage units. There was lunch at the theatre again but this time it was hot dogs, yum, and they had turkey dogs that weren’t too bad.

After lunch we went back and had bucket wars, which is a game the paint ladies made up to make the time of washing buckets go faster. Patti won for the first time ever so it was pretty funny. She won the golden bucket and boy did we take a lot of pictures. We were also let out early, which was nice.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday....

Sunday April 11, 2010

Today I got up at 8:30 am which I was not happy about and try as I might I could not fall back asleep. I got up and went hiking at Devil’s Hoplake State Park it was very pretty and had a large creek winding through it. I made pierogies for lunch and they were awesome.

In the afternoon I read my book outside and sat out in the sun for a little bit. I also, worked on the SYE paper for a while. I went with Tyler and Eric to the Gelston House for dinner, it’s the restaurant right next to the opera house. All three of us hung out outside of the theatre talking to people on there dinner break. I talked to some people back home after dinner. In the evening I watched some TV.

Monday April 12, 2010

In the morning we all met at the theatre to take care of paint notes. In the afternoon I went back to the theater to help paint the border on the act drop. I also, aged some rope for the show with a pre-valve. I was really fun because I had never used one before. Lunch was provided today so that was fun, and there was egg salad, yum. The act drop was pronounced done because the carpenters will be loading it in at 6:00 am tomorrow morning.

Tuesday April 13, 2010

Today all I did was wash buckets, brushes, spatulas, etc. For some of the afternoon I cleaned the entire shop more because I don’t think a pant shop is ever technically clean. The whole group had lunch at the theater again which was nice even though the theater only serves sandwiches for lunch, I have been noticing a trend. In all it was a very productive day and now I am going to go over to the theatre for dinner and I hope its not sandwiches.

Saturday, April 10, 2010

Saturday..

Today I got into the shop at 9:00 am to do some smaller projects that needed finished. In the morning I worked on the hotel sign for a little bit and base coated the footlights because the lighting people needed them by 11:00 am this morning. I then proceeded to put more of the show paint into the road box while doing this I cleaned up the shop a little bit. All the painters went down to the theater for lunch because during tech and dress rehearsals the theater provides meals for the whole company which is awesome.

After lunch I kept working on the road box and putting dirty buckets by the sinks to be washed. I then cleaned off the mixing table and reorganized it. I also, cleaned off over half of the deck and took the eight bags of trash out. Needless to say I cleaned for a very long time today but the shop looks better now. When I got off work I went and threw some laundry in at Goddspeed’s laundry room and then went to dinner at the theatre. I went to Wal-Mart and got some new sunglasses because I broke my old ones. I also went to Stop and Shop tonight and got a little bit of groceries but not a lot seeing as how Goodspeed is providing food for most of the week.

Friday....

Today I based out another coat on the porch pieces and then Patti and I put stars onto the footlights. This morning I also perforated our last sign in the show, Thank God. I then pounced it onto some sticky back paper and drew it in with pencil. Then it was time for lunch and some people went out to the Cooking Company but I just ate what I had packed.

The afternoon I spent putting show paint into little deli cups with Patti. Any extra paint we put in a large deli cup and put it on a shelf organized by color. Some of the paint became combined and labeled as back paint. My last hour at work was spent making the back of a flat look aged. I used brown and black by watering it down and making each of them into a glaze. I had a lot of fun with it and now I am at home debating what to do on this Friday night because we will be working tomorrow.

Thursday...

Today during the morning hours I painted the first coat of lettering on the shootout banner with Phyllis. That was that the two of us did all morning needless to say it was really stressful because you can’t mess up on final lettering. Then we all had lunch and some of us had leftover pizza from the night before.

During the afternoon we tested the sky drop to make sure that is was the right intensity for the stage lighting and some of it needed to be darkened more so we stappled it back down and Julia finished it just before we left for the day. The rest of my afternoon was spent base coating some pieces in the porch scene and more lettering. Also, Annie Oakley was done so she got taken to the shop. The banners with the Indian and cowboy were done so they were also taken over to the opera house. Were going to have to work again this weekend but I don’t really mind because I am learning an awful lot.

Wednesday....

This morning when I got into to the shop I worked on perforating the shoot out banner with Patti. Once it was perforated we pounced it onto the drop itself. By this time it was lunch when we had finished pouncing the drop. I went on a walk today with all of the painters and it was fun. It was cool to see what was behind the shop, there were several small businesses. After lunch cleaned the shop up a bit and I painted a second coat of dark green onto the railing as well as a base coat for wood grain on the railing pieces. I painted some of the shoot out banner and helped flip the Annie drop one more time. The rest of my night was spent cleaning and washing brushes. The whole group got pizza for working late which was really nice, and yummy.

Tuesday...

This morning I pounced the entire shootout banner by myself and helped take down a banner that needed to get transported to the opera house. After lunch I finished pouncing the whole banner. I got to use the electric pounce machine which was really cool because you run a wand across the paper on top of a metal plate and it burns hole into the paper, it’s a lot faster then just using a regular pounce wheel. In the afternoon I got to paint the moon for the show essentially it’s a light box that is lit at some point in the show, when I am not sure. Today I got to load up the road box which was very exciting because it’s interesting what exactly you need to load up ad move to another space. Trust me there is a lot more in there then just the show paint, spray paint, latex paint, brushes, buckets, paint concentrate, bamboo sticks, just to name a few. I also painted a railing that I think is apart of the train scene. Today was a very insightful day and it was sunny outside.

Week 3...

Went into work and started back painting the train seats which didn’t take very long. Krista and I made a box for the shoot out banner and then stapled the drop into it. While Phyllis and Krista were starching the drop I took bridges out of the large Indians and pioneers drop. I also covered the bottom lettering with bogus paper so they wouldn’t get messed up while the majority of the drop was being painted. We all had lunch and I ran to the library in town and printed off application stuff I couldn’t send via email. All afternoon I spent drawing out the letters for the shoot out banner so that tomorrow we can ounce it. I am now going to finish the applications I printed out in the library and send them out tomorrow.

Friday and Saturday....

Friday April 2, 2010

In the morning I pounced out Annie for the drop. Phyllis and I pounced all of the lettering on to the bottom of the Annie drop. The rest of the morning was spent starting to ink in the lettering. We all went to The Cooking Company for lunch and it wass very good. The place is kind of a cross between a Panera and a Boston market.

When we all got back from lunch we spent the rest of the day inking in the lettering and managed to finish with enough time to pounce the horse and Annie onto the upper half of the drop. It was quite an accomplishment to get that much done on the drop in a day but then again everything has to be done by Thursday and we have six drops to finish.

Patti had all of us over for a lasagna dinner and some of the carpenters came over too. It was nice to just hang out and not talk about work. I could tell everyone just needed to unwind because all of us are kind of tense about finishing everything on time. I got to meet Patti’s husband Bob he is really nice.

Saturday April 3, 2010

Today we all got in at 9:00 am and worked on the projects we were working on Friday. Emily went to work on the Indian banners, Julia kept working on her sky. Krista, Patti, Carla and I kept working on the Annie drop. We inked in the horse and Annie herself. The four of us managed to paint in all of the lettering at the bottom of the drop which was awesome to get knocked out. All of us had leftovers from last night for lunch and the lasagna was as awesome as it was last night.

I ran over to the laundry room to get laundry done for the week because it’s not open on Sundays and it was around 5:00 pm so it closed soon. Goodspeed has a laundry room for their employees to use, it’s very nice of them to provide one so close. I think one of the administrators lives above it.

I am also including pictures of the paint shop so you can see my daily work space.

Happy April Fools Day

Today during the morning I finished completely pouncing everything on the Annie Oakley pounce. Then we turned the Annie drop over after we cut whole in it and stapled scrim over the whole. Patti, Phyllis and I then proceeded to glue the scrim to the drop. The whole group went outside for lunch today because the sun was actually out for the first time all week. It was nice to sit out side and get some vitamin D. I asked Krista and Emily about resumes and interview since they were both interviewing people for summer jobs right now. I got some fun little points about how to make my resume seem I wrote it just for that company and to not sound like I know everything in the world but I knew about the last part.

After we got back from lunch I started painting in a second coat of lettering on the two drops I have been working off and on all week. I took one of the bridges out of the sky drop and then went back to lettering. After the second coat of color was put on the drops Patti and I put two coats of red on the letters for the Indian/pioneer drop. I then took masking off the top of the train where small windows are. Both Patti and I snapped chalk lines on one of the lettered drops that were done.

The middle of the week....

All of us got into the shop this morning and went straight to work. Phylis and I working on the Annie Oakley drop again by pouncing part of the circle on the drop and then pouncing that section onto the drop. We then took the craft paper back over to our area and continued pouncing the craft paper. By lunch we had some of the lettering done. Then mid afternoon rolled around and we had almost all of the lettering done. Then by the time I left tonight the horse and 90% of the lettering was done. Before the pouncing we also drew everything in and somewhere in there I back painted part of the train which is almost assembled.

Oh, I forgot to tell you all we are painting Annie Get Your Gun that is the show I am working on right now. Also, the rain was not half as bad as it was yesterday.

I got an Easter basket in the mail from my Mom it was really nice to get it and know she is thinking of me.

Tuesday... lots of rain... :(

This morning after all of us got into the shop Patti and I made more boxes for the Annie Oakley drop. Then both of us stapled down the actual canvas being used for the drop and some scrim that is supposed to go on the back of the drop behind Annie’s face. There was a lot more lettering today on the two drops I was working on yesterday so that I did on and off all day. Patti and I starched the Annie Oakley drop which was fun because I had never done that before. The whole group sat down for lunch today and some people ran errands. The people who ran errands came back and told us that parts of the roads were flooded. It had been raining almost non stop since Monday night so I was not surprised. Needless to say it rained very hard all day long.

After lunch my afternoon was spent doing more and more lettering. I got a small break when I got to paint the train seating all over again because the carpenters forgot some finishing touches on them. I didn’t mind though because it was a break from all the lettering. I managed to get the base coat and two coats of copper paint on before it was time to go.

Monday... =P

This morning when I got into work Krista and I got the finale drop up and off the floor. Some of the carpenters came in, rolled it up, and took it away to be loaded on stage. The rest of my morning was helping Emily align different lettering that needed to be pounced on to the smaller drops. The whole group then had lunch and we couldn’t go outside and walk because there was a torrential down pour all day.

After lunch Emily and I finished pouncing the two drops with all of their lettering components. After that was finished we both started inking the drops with sharpie. You cannot make mistakes in the instance so needless to say I was quite nervous. Emily was pulled away to start helping someone else with another project and I was left all by myself. I got even more nervous then but there was nothing I could do about it so I just kept inking the drop I was working on. Later Phyllis came over and started inking the second lettered drop.

Now I am home and trying to finish more job applications.

Sunday...

Today I slept in till 11 am which was really nice. I got up and had a hot pocket for lunch. Eric, Allegra, and I went to the Family Laundromat to do laundry which was fun because it is in Deep River so we got to walk around the town square while our laundry was going. We went in to Dunkin’ Doughnuts, that was my first time being in there and it reminded me a lot of Tim Horton’s. I spent the rest of the day applying for summer and full time seasonal work. I don’t want to say where because I don’t want to jinx it.

Saturday...

Saturday March 27, 2010

I got up today and made lunch then started working on journal writing. So I finally found a real legitimate grocery store I made a trip to the Old Saybrook Stop & Shop today. It took about 25 minutes to get there and it was packed because it was a Saturday afternoon. I sense that I am just going to have to get used to this driving 30 minutes to get to anything business.

I took some pictures this afternoon:

This is where I am living
This is my backyard
In the evening I made chicken quesadillas and watched some TV. Later in the night I started working on internship applications.

Thursday and Friday...

Thursday March 25, 2010

In the morning Phyllis and I made more boxes for several smaller drop we stapled them to the deck and made sure they were square. I put the first coat of copper on to the train seats. Then the whole group had lunch and some of us went on a walk during the first part of our lunch break because it was so nice outside. While I was painting the train seat I got to watch several different people starch the drops, which was something I had never seen before.

After lunch the sky drop was starched twice because it is a translucent drop. I helped finish perforating the lettered drop I had started Wednesday.

Tonight I went out with a few carpenters and almost all of the painters to a place called Rudy’s it’s a small dive bar in New Haven. Rudy’s reminded me a lot of Houndog’s back home except more chicken tenders and fries instead of pizza.

Friday March 26, 2010

In the morning I worked with Julia, we took the craft paper the we perforated for the sky drop and taped it over the drop. Then we used little pouches of charcoal and attached them to bamboo sticks. The both of us then proceeded to rub the charcoal over the drawing. The next step was to lift the craft paper off the drop and what was left was a faint charcoal drawing of the sky. I helped Julia prepare her work space so she could start air brushing the drop. I then started the second coat of copper paint on the train seats. The majority of us went to lunch at The Cooking Company today. It is this really cute little place down the street from the paint shop. They have sandwiches that you can order or premade food. I got bow tie pasta and fresh fruit it was delicious.

When I got back from lunch I finished the second coat on the train seating. Then I removed bridges from two of the smaller drops and stapled them back to the deck. After I did that Krista sprayed the drops with hot water apparently this gets out even more wrinkles that might be left from taking out the bridge. My next task was to help Alison mask off different parts of the train that were going to get painted gold. I had to be very precise so that the wood grain that was already finished did not get ruined. The pieces that I masked off are to be painted gold. I put a base coat on all of the different molding pieces. For the rest of the day I helped Phyllis snap border lines around a huge drop that had Indians and pioneers on it. It seems very intricate and looks like it will take a really long time to paint. Other people were working on it by inking the out lines of the different figures on the drop.

My roommate Erin cooked garlic chicken tonight and she is a pretty good cook I think I am going to ask her to show me a few of her ticks in the kitchen.

My roommates and I had a little shindig here in the house last night. It was fun and I got to meet some new people mostly from the box office all of the other people I had previously met.

Day Two...

After getting in to the paint shop this morning everyone went to their different projects. The whole morning Phyllis and I spent projecting the sky drop on to craft paper. We traced the lines from the projector on to the craft paper in sections to create a grid that can be lined up on to the drop. The drop is 37ft by 16ft 6in so needless to say it took the whole morning to complete it. Then the group sat in the break room and had lunch again.

My afternoon was spent switching more of the bogus paper on the deck. Then Phyllis and I mapped out a box for the sky drop to be stapled into. We used some geometry and lining sticks to make the box. Phyllis and I then stapled the drop into the box and because our math was right the first time it fit. I cleaned off the deck after we completed stapling the sky drop. The last little bit of my day was spent pouncing lettering for another drop.

Now I am going to see if I can finish my paper work for Goodspeed.

It's sunny today! :)

First Day plus the weekend...

Sunday March 21, 2010
Spent 9 hours driving with my Mom we spent the night in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was nice to spend the time with my Mom.

Monday March 22, 2010

Got up early with my Mom and we drove the last 4 hours to East Haddam, Connecticut. We arrived at the paint shop around 2:00 pm and I meet Carla. She briefly introduced me to some of the people who were over hire in the shop. My first impression of the shop is that it is huge and amazing. From first glance I could tell they had an area for washing, mixing, storage, and lots of floor space. All three of us drove over to The Boardman which is where I am to stay while I am at Goodspeed. Then Carla went back to the paint shop while my Mom and I went to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we moved everything up to my room and then went to the near by super market. The super market was very, very tiny I now know I need to find a bigger one because this one was not going to cut it (and it was really expensive). Then my Mom left which was sad because this is literally the first time I have lived further then 30 minutes from her. I am really on my own now.  I then proceeded to move into my room and get settled. I am in room “S” it has a double bed and a closet so I feel really lucky to have some space. My room is also on the third floor in the back of the house so I do have some privacy which is really nice. People started coming home, so around 6:30 pm I went down stairs and made my dinner, hoping to meet some new people.

I met Emily she is a Boston University Graduate and she says she got the job here because her professor Diane used to be the charge artist at Goodspeed for a couple years. Emily is a over hire scenic artist and also lives in New York, New York where she primarily does free lance work. I met Erin who is an electrics apprentice she graduated from a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania. Eric is also one of my roommates and he actually only has 2 years of college under his belt and started working here because the Technical Director at the time offered him an over hire job and now he is a carpentry apprentice. I watched some TV with all of them and then went to bed.

Tuesday March 23, 2010

My first day as the painting intern was a lot of fun. In the morning all of us hung out in the break room until Carla gave everybody their projects of the moment. Carla and I then went over to the scene shop which is right across the parking lot from the paint shop. I was introduced to Adam who is the technical director, Eric who I had already met, Rob Z (Carla loves to call him ROBZZZZZ), and the props carpenter who’s name I cannot remember right now. Then we went past props storage to the props kitchen where I was introduced to Tony the props master and Tom who is his assistant (Carla calls Tom, Guacamole Tom, why I will find out).  Before we left the building we went up to Adam’s office where I got to meet Charlie, Adam’s dog, he is so cute and very spazzy so we get along really well.

Carla and I walked back over to the paint shop where she gave me the grand tour of the shop. It is bigger and even more fabulous then I thought! There is an area for washing brushes, mixing paint, work tables on wheels, and a soft goods area. The cool part was the storage which was all labeled and you have to sign out stuff when you take it out of storage so Carla knows when to order more. The whole shop is organized and kept clean 24/7, I was stunned. There is also a projection area that is curtained off which was really neat. The way they label their paint is they write each color they mixed in to get the color, and then list them by what color they put the most of in. I thought that was really nice so the next person can mix more if needed. There is a raised floor on the second half of the shop that is called the deck where they paint their soft goods.

After my tour I started working with Krista she actually graduated from Clemson University with an Architecture degree. Then she went on to Florida University and got her MFA in Scenic Design. I got to talk to her a majority of the day about her career. I must say she is a very good teacher. My first project was to cover bare wood on the sides of some scenery because Goodspeed never puts any bare wood on stage, Carla told me this. Then I worked with Krista on cutting out and lining up some craft paper that we are going to later pounce and use to map out a drop. The both of us next went over to the front of the shop and used pounce wheels to perforate the Cowboy graphic on craft paper. Later it will be put on to a drop by tapping a pouch of charcoal on it so that when you remove the craft paper there is a guide to complete the drop. Then we all went into the break room to have lunch. There are not many places to eat around East Haddam. Apparently there is not much of anything unless you drive about a half hour according to Emily which I am sure is true. Needless to say everyone packed there lunch today.

After lunch Krista and I helped Patti and Phyllis recover the deck with paper because it got to messy. Apparently the deck gets fresh paper after every show but the projects this time are just really messy. Then the four of us measured out a drop and I learned what “burning a foot” means, when you are measuring a drop you start at one foot and then measure from there because you cannot count on the bottom of a tape measurer to be perfect so they just start measuring at a foot.

The rest of the day Krista and I spent working on the proscenium pieces for the show. We flipped the front most piece to the back and stapled it back to the deck. Then we “back painted” it which means at least 80% of all of the scenery has to be painted on the back because of fire hazards. Apparently the fire marshal is a stickler for the rules so we follow them to a tee here at Goodspeed. Also, the piece needed to be painted on the back for lighting purposes so no light would come through the back. The last part of my day was getting a demo from Krista on how clean the brushes need to be and cutting scalloped edges on the other proscenium pieces.

I was introduced to two new people today. Alison is a painter who graduated from Boston University she is also a student of Diane’s. Julia is one of my roommates and she worked on a sample for the sky drop today. It looked amazing and I am pretty sure from her sample that she will paint the drop with an air brush technique.

Julia, Emily, Alison, and I went to the Adam’s fresh food market after work and the selection is a little better there but still expensive. Julia told me if I really want to go grocery shopping I should go to the grocery in Old Saybrook called the Super Stop & Shop. She says it’s a lot nicer and cheaper. We all came home, had dinner and watched Jeopardy. Now I am going to fill out paper work so that I can get a paycheck at the end of the week.

It has rained everyday since I got here. :(
